MemberWe’ve had a Rottweiler who initially was fed whatever my husband (single at the time) fed him…crazy stuff Probably dog chow and table scraps and he lived for 16 years. He died of, we believe diabetes.
A Brussels griffen, who also ate dog kibble for the most part but was also growing up at the point that people where not paying as much attention and the melanmie issue came up. Then we switched to better dog food, probably higher protein the last 5 years of his life. He only lived for 10 years and died of liver cancer.
A Brittany, who was also fed similarly to the brussels griffen and we just had to put her down in July because of cushing disease, she had also gone blind a year prior. She was 12.
I keep reading and reading about dog food and get so confused…raw/high protein/low protein/no grains/with grains…it is overwhelming to try and figure out what is best for my dogs healthy life. We now have a 5 year old/45 lb shepherd mix and an 8 lb 2 year old mix of some sort of shitzu/brussels…truly Heinz 57.

MemberMy take is that Chewy sells many brands of dog/cat food and it’s still the choice of the consumer which to purchase. Even though the advisor links to them, in my opinion, is a convenience. My favorite dog food shop (small locally owned) doesn’t carry a couple of the brands that I prefer for my dogs and Chewy does…and it’s also convenient to order and have delivered to my front door. If Chewy only sold one brand and there was a link I’d be concerned.

Member@elainec I looked at that website and it appears their food is a “milk?”

Member@PitLuv Thank you for the update on Darwin’s and a better source for raw. I will look at this further.
@anon101 Thank you for those links to Reddit. I saw some of that info yesterday and the red flags went up. That’s one of the reasons I came to this forum to discuss all of this further. And, the reason I will call some labs today to see how much it costs to test the food I feed my dogs. Hopefully it’s not a small fortune!

MemberThank you for that information. I didn’t expect Dog Food Advisor to test the food for me…I had planned on finding a lab to make sure the food I feed is ok.

MemberI don’t think my vet is actually going to know about the toxins. I think this is the elephant in the room. No one is paying attention to this. I’ve been looking at a site that creates raw food, Darwins, and so far they seem to be very high quality; however, I’m on the fence about a raw diet based on other things I have read, including information on skeptvet. My husband suggested that I contact a local lab and have them test the food that we feed our dogs. I don’t know what this costs, but I’m going to research it. That way hopefully I find out the truth.
The thing about CLP is that we also need to know what their agenda is. I’ve seen some posts that they are funded by people/company that produces lower quality food so that these reports steer us back towards that food. I think the fish aspect of high toxins is probably valid since there is so much in our oceans/lakes that are easily absorbed by fish.
Thanks everyone for your input…I guess we will all be watching carefully for answers.
