The degree of the injury sustained is not correlated with the likelihood of developing chronic pain. Chronic pain can interfere with your daily activities, such as working, having a social life and taking care of yourself or others. It can lead to depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping, which can make your pain worse. This response creates a cycle thatās difficult to break. Chronic pain usually means pain that has lasted for at least three months. Sometimes pain lasting six months or more is defined as chronic pain. It can be confusing, as these terms are all used to mean the same thing. With age, and without regular chiropractic treatment, our muscle fibres lose their density, making them less flexible and more likely to become sore ā and we also become more prone to injury. So where you might once have been able to whack a ball around a tennis court or dance the night away without worry, you could now find yourself feeling more than usually stiff the next day. Acute pain is a sudden, sharp pain that lasts less than 6 months. Acute pain acts as a warning to your body that it is unsafe and its health has been compromised. A common belief is that acute pain is mild and temporary. But in fact, acute pain is very complex. When we sense pain, we pay attention to our bodies and can take steps to fix what hurts. With adequate pain management, it is possible to maintain daily activities, social engagement, and an active quality of life. Very rarely, individuals in pain can diagnose the social situation, stop complaining, and put on an act that signals to others that they are not in pain despite their continued problems. Managing pain often means creating opportunities to be positive. Taking part in enjoyable activities has been shown to decrease the effects of pain signals in the body. Chronic pain lasts months or years and can interfere with your ability to work, enjoy activities and take care of yourself or others. If you have chronic pain, please talk to a healthcare provider or pain specialist. There are ways to manage your pain to help you toward a more comfortable life. Fractures range from simple compression fractures, in which the bone collapses upon itself, getting pushed together; to burst fractures, when pieces of bone explode out into the tissues around the spine, including the nerves and spinal cord. The worst of these injuries is called fracture-dislocation, in which the bone breaks but, because the ligaments are torn as well, the bones slide away from each other. Breaking a bone can be incredibly painful. Fractures of the ankle, hip, arm and nose are among the most painful of all injuries. Small breaks are less painful, but larger ones can lead to agony, especially if the person tries to move. Broken bones generally need lining up and repositioning so they set properly. The general recovery time depends on the size of the bone and the age of the person. If you have ankle pain, chances are good that your calves are tight and are pulling on your ankles, limiting your range of motion. If you have knee pain, chances are good that your quads, hips, hamstrings, and calves (all the musculature that connects to your knee) are brutally tight. If you have chronic pain and depression and/or anxiety, itās important to seek treatment for your mental health. Untreated depression and anxiety can make your pain worse and further lower your quality of life. Although it is important to take prescribed medications for pain, individuals need to address how well the analgesics are working for them over time as well as the long term effects and side effects. Opioids can become less effective over time and patients can build tolerance or become dependent. Pain is something that we all have at some time in our lives. However, if you live with chronic pain, it can affect your mental and physical wellbeing and social life and may mean that you are unable to work. Pain Clinics offer a wide range of treatments including medication, nerve blocks, manipulation, exercise and access to Pain Management Programmes (PMPs) to teach you self-help skills to control and relieve your pain. Getting involved in activities or hobbies which take the focus of attention away from pain can be helpful. A hobby like sewing, photography or model-making, which you can do even when your activity is restricted, can fill time when you might otherwise feel that you are ābeing lazyā or āsitting around doing nothingā. Pain can be debilitating and frustrating. It may interfere with sleep, work, activities, and quality time with friends and family. Pain management provides relief so you can enjoy life. But treatment is complex and can lead to harmful effects if not properly administered and monitored.
