MemberI fed EVERY part of the pig except intestines, stomach, pancreas, lungs, and legs (trotters). Some because I could not source them, some because they are too dirty, and some because they are too dangerous to feed (I donāt like trotters). I raw fed my GSD until he recently passed from old age. I fed all pork bones except legs. The pork necks are pretty hard and should be fed to careful bone eaters and not gulpers. The ribs are not quite as hard, but still hard. They can be fed joined together so the dog crushes before swallowing. My boy has swallowed one or two without crushing much, but it never caused any problems. The bones are digestible unlike beef bones. I froze my pork 3 weeks before serving just as an extra measure for killing parasites and worms although MANY people say itās not necessary. I fed food grade DE as a natural worm preventative and didnāt take chances with the raw food I fed. In fact, I froze everything for at least 3 weeks before serving. I will tell you that my boy never had any digestive or poo issues in 10 years. That includes worms or parasites. I am not paranoid about meat, just well educated on it. Meat has the potential to harbor parasites and worms. Some forms of bacteria, like campylobacter are destroyed by 90% during freezing.

MemberAnonymously: A semi-raw diet? No wonder you had problems. No one should be mixing Kibble and raw food together. Raw should be fed 100% of the time to prevent illness. I am not sure what āresearchā everyone is doing, but good research should tell you too feed PMRD 80/10/5/5. I cringe when I see people are feeding raw thighs, wings, liver, some piece of this or that. That is NOT a raw diet. That is a person feeding random raw foods without any idea to balance or nutritional needs. On top of that people mix these raw foods with kibble. Itās a disaster just waiting to happen. Meat, bone, liver, and organs should be fed in certain percentages. Advising to feed random raw foods, or feeding random raw foods is irresponsible. Learn the fundamentals to feeding raw. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LearningRawWithRoxane/

MemberPitlove: I had and intern from a vetās office join my raw group. She was looking to learn raw since her dog was experiencing Cushings symptoms from taking steroids for 4 years as a treatment for allergies. I donāt know anyone feeding raw whose dog takes steroids for allergies. Thousands of people are getting great results from feeding raw. An article by 4 vets is not going to change that.

MemberThank you pitlove: I have fed raw long enough to tell you that conventional vets do not approve of raw feeding. Veterinary schools like UC Davis have nutrition classes taught and sponsored by Hills dog food the makers of Science Diet and many other unhealthy kibbles. Vets receive kickbacks and incentives from kibble companies, mainly Hills. This is why you see these kibbles sold in most vet offices. I interact with thousands of raw feeders. Too bad these 4 vets didnāt research and report on our success feeding raw.

MemberIndeed raw foods do contain bacteria, but luckily our dogs are carnivores which is why they can eat bacteria laden foods and thrive. We humans just need to wash up afterwards just like we do when we prepare our own meat meals for dinner. The article is written by Vets that do not support raw feeding, so what they say is biased and untrue. There is evidence to support that raw is better than cooked and kibble. I know thousands of raw feeders that will attest to it.

MemberPitlove: Can you show proof to support what youāve posted or are you posting hearsay? Who tested these diets? The AAFCO? The AAFCO likes to see food fortified before they give their stamp of approval and if they donāt see it fortified, they say it is deficient. And what dog food do you feed? Kibble? Kibble is worthless nutrition and that is why it needs added vitamins and minerals. If you want to do research, google what is in dry dog food or how dry dog food is made. That will be a real eye opener for you. Kibble is not species appropriate and is not healthy for dogs. I have been feeding my 8.5 year old GSD Prey Model Raw Diet for years and he is healthy 100%. Thousands of people are feeding complete and balanced raw diets to their pets. There might be some people who do not feed raw correctly, but that is because they lack knowledge and support. Personally, I donāt think kibble feeders are feeding their dogās correctly. I teach how to feed raw properly. PMRD 80/10/5/5 guidelines are balanced and complete. BARF and PMRD are live foods with all their natural nutrients. Nothing is better for dogs. Raw dogs are beautiful and very healthy. You are taking a chance on your dogās health if you are feeding kibble or anything other than raw.

MemberI know this post is old, but my heart goes out to Cyndi and others like her who are looking for instructions on how to feed raw to their dogs. I have a FB group that teaches how to calculate 80/10/5/5 which is how much meat, bone, liver and secreting organs should be fed to each particular dog. People need more than general information. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LearningRawWithRoxane/

MemberI feed my GSD a raw diet and feed raw pork as a regular staple with no problems. I freeze it 3 weeks before serving just to be on the safe side. I do not feed any cooked foods and would not advise feeding any dog pork (or any foods) loaded with human flavorings or processed pork like bacon. A raw diet is species appropriate and superior to any kibble. Join my Facebook group if your interested in learning how to feed raw. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LearningRawWithRoxane/

MemberI feed PMRD 80/10/5/5 and believe organs are essential for making the diet complete. I still feel organs should not be fed during the transitioning from kibble to raw until the dogās gut has had time to develop a more acidic PH level (after 3 different proteins and no diarrhea). When dogs just start out eating raw the PH in their guts are still too alkaline from kibble. They can have trouble digesting the rich nutrients and fats in organ meat. A dogās gut needs time to develop the acidic PH levels capable of digesting organs (and raw bones). Especially, in small breeds like the OPās dog.

MemberI realize this post is old, but I wanted to comment anyway for those who see it and become fearful of feeding raw. There is a lot of information missing here to determine why this dog got sick. I have seen this happen before with other people, and the problem is not with the raw diet. Here are some reasons for failureā¦People are feeding kibble and raw food together which can cause illness. Pancreatitis is from eating too much fat and is rare in dogs, it can be caused by underlying issues or a high fatty meal. Many commercial pre-packaged meals contain organs. Organs should not be fed when transitioning from kibble to raw. ONE PROTEIN should have been introduced first. Too bad this person did not have a holistic vet to help teach her how to feed raw properly. Completes have organs which are a fatty and a no, no when starting raw. I prepare my own raw food and follow PMRD guidelines 80/10/5/5. This way I know how much my GSD is eating in the way of raw meat, raw bone, raw liver and raw secreting organ. As far as salmonella poisoning I am going to say I donāt believe it. This dear person told their non-supportive, non-raw friendly, conventional vet, that she was feeding raw and so he assumed the dog had salmonella poisoning. Iāve heard this many times before.
