What is the significance of the fat to protein ratio? What is considered a “bad” ratio?

    Hi Melinda,

To calculate the ratio, you divide the fat content by the protein content. From what I have read, 50% to 70% is deemed acceptable.

The “ideal” ratio is 50%, which basically means the food gets the same amount of calories from fat as from protein. Some dogs do better on higher fat and some need lower, but if the fat is too high then the dogs caloric needs may be met before it’s protein needs are met.
