I kno it is such a waste of money. I am sorry that you are going through that too. I don’t want people to think that I work for a pet company. I am actually a banker. My unbiased advice is try Victor you can hopefully buy it locally or buy it on chewy.com. It has worked wonders for my dog and a couple of friends that had trouble with orijen. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

Hi! I’m a new member and first time dog owner – my American Bandogge is 8 weeks old. we got her at 5 weeks and i started her on large breed puppy formula from Taste of the Wild – as i liked the contents and wanted to stay away from grains… But now reading these forums i’m not sure it’s a good formula due to calcium content and contemplating to convert her to Orijen – should i do that? or is TOTW okay for large breed puppies? i really do not want her to develop hip displasia…
    Thanks for your help!

I have had Boxers for years and I know only too well those sensitive guts. Right now I have a 9 1/2 y/o and I feed Canine Caviar Limited Ingredient Free Sprit and Nature’s Logic Canine Chicken Meal Feast. I look for dry foods without peas, legumes or beans of any kind. I find that with the newer formulations of even Champion Pet foods (Acana and Orijen) these are being added and are in the first 3-5 ingredients and so many dogs are just incapable of digesting and utilizing legumes. I fed Acana for many years but I do not anymore. I love the company and their transparency and their mission statement.
May I ask how you feed,i.e.: twice a day or are they given food to free feed throughout the day? I’ve had a lot of Boxers which also include over 60 rescues and Boxers live to eat….unless they are ill. They do best with two feedings a day 10-12 hours apart. My hunch is that your guys just may have residual upset stomachs and hence why they are spitting food out

I have a five month old Cavapoo who was started on Diamond Natural Dry Puppy food and we have changed her to Orijen puppy which she likes and it seems to agree with her system. I called Champion about two months ago and asked them what the difference between the Kentucky and Canadian plants. Their response was the type of local fish they put into the recipe, other than that they insisted the USA products were “cooked” the same.

I have been feeding the Six Fish from Canada to my 10 month old English Bulldog with great results. After 10 days on the USA formula he has developed diarrhea. His stools have firmed some with the addition of pumpkin, but they are still too loose.
I am so disappointed to not be able to continue on this food. I was so hoping that Orijen would strive to keep their USA comparable to the Canadian.
Just ordered a bag of Horizon Legacy to try.

I posted earlier about buying out all the Canadian Bags of Orijen Six fish due to my dog’s chicken allergy. I have successfully transitioned my dogs over to Wellness CORE Fish formula. It has limited fresh ingredients, zero, poultry, grain or fillers and my dogs love it. Thank you for your suggestion to cook fish for my dogs Cannoli!! One of my kids has an anaphylactic reaction to fish so we do not cook it in our house. Having fish dog food does not affect him thankfully. I hope everyone finds a suitable alternative to the Acan and Orijen. I did extensive research and the Wellness CORE is a good fit for us. Good luck!

My rescue dog Barney was throwing up in the mornings and I took him to the vet a bunch of times. We tried the prescription diets they recommended but it didn’t help. In our case, I think it was the dry kibble causing the problem–it was a good brand Orijen, but maybe it didn’t agree with him. I was reading about acid reflux on this site http://www.askariel.com/dog_cat_acid_reflux_treatment_a/277.htm and I switched him to a raw frozen diet. We ordered the Gastro ULC and Power Probiotic and followed the diet suggestion that the nutritionist gave us. Barney is eating Primal raw frozen rabbit with some Natural Balance canned fish/sweet potato. The vitamins did seem to help. He still has an occasional bad day, but nothing like before.

    Hi Bette,

I am sorry that you are going through that. I think most folks did, and who knows why they made those changes. I chose to go with Victor they have a lot of different choices. A buddy of mine that had his pup on orijen went with Natures logic. I also think hollistic selct has good options. I have been doing so much research I hope that helped. Otherwise let me know and I’ll be happy to give my opinion in more detail.

I personally don’t like senior food. Senior dogs need good quality high protein and just about all of them are too low in protein. Orijen is the exception but if you’re in the US. They opened a plant in Kentucky and there seem to be some problems.

If this was my dog, I’d go back to what she ate before, water the food & see how it goes.
    Good luck!

    Hello,

As a manager at a Pet Supplies Plus with extensive experience in pet nutrition, I would say that it is very possible that Blue is too rich for your pups. I have had many people come into my store and switch off of Blue or Orijen/Scans because of loose stools, anal gland issues, etc. These usually arise from a food that is too high in fat or rich proteins for the dog. Many of my customers have switched to Redford, and those problems disappear. It’s all about finding the right proteins for your pup. Nowadays, there are so many food choices, pet owners are overwhelmed. Go to your local PSP and ask for assistance!

My allergy prone dogs have been thriving on Zignature for years after getting skin bumps from Orijen. I’m so grateful to this kibble and would be royally screwed without it. You can read all the reviews for it on Chewy.com.

I use Orijen Puppy and will go to Original. I am sure it’s made in Kentucky. The kibble size is the same.

I just opened a new bag of Six Fish Formula. The kibble is larger, so I called Chewy. They told me it is the same exact formula, just produced in the USA and that it’s still Champion Pet foods.
Has anyone else had this experience?

    Thanks in advance.

    Topic: Fiber?

    in forum Off Topic Forum

    Hello,

I’ve recently added in some produce to my dogs diet and it seems like the additional fiber was causing her problems. I had been feeding her a tablespoon of fruitables pumpkin in the morning and a tablespoon of pureed greens in the afternoon along with each meal. I also was feeding carrot chips and blueberries as snacks/treats. At first she seemed ok but the she started having loose stools. 3/4 of her stool was ok but the last 1/4 was loose. She’s been having stools like this for about a week so I stopped all the produce about two days ago. I’m actually still seeing bits of blueberries and pumpkin in her stool. Her stool was a little better this morning. Is this a normal reaction? I do a rotational diet and she’s currently on Orijen six fish which has 4% fiber. I give her Fromm biscuits which has 5% fiber. Is she just fiber sensitive? I guess my only thought is she doesn’t need the extra fiber which is why I stopped giving her produce altogether. She seems fine with her food rotations so I don’t think it’s that. She’s also been on Orijen (USA) before and had no problems. Has anyone else had reactions like this before when feeding produce? Just wondering if this is normal? I will note she also just recently had her yearly check up and is in perfect health. Thanks!

Also, I talked to my vet and he thought I should stick to one brand for a year before I rotate. He said it was fine to rotate flavors monthly though. What do you guys think? I’ve been rotating flavors and brands monthly. Is this too much do you think? What’s your experiences with this?

    Hi Roberta-

I just wanted to note that “Dogstar” is the name of Champions plant in Kentucky. It is not a company that purchased Orijen from Champion. The plant in Canada is called “NorthStar” and the one in Kentucky is called “DogStar”. Hope this helps!

Good luck with Open Farm! I like the concept of food and that even though it is a Canadian based company they still manufacture the food in the U.S in Minnesota.

Try the food I mentioned on my previous answers. My buddy has an 8 year old dog that developed severe allergies after being on his food for 5 years. I recommended this food and huge difference allergies gone, more energy and nice solid poop. I had bought Orijen from Reily originally but after reading the horror stories I returned it. The associates at the pet store even said only use the bags from Canada but I think we ran out.

I have never written on any of these, but ALWAYS have read and researched dog foods and topics etc. I am so grateful for this site and finding ALL the information. My girl will be 3 on Feb 14th. She has been sick since Christmas day. I found it odd that she had calcium oxylate crystals and a UTI after a vet visit. True I read that with Orijen, they need to drink more BUT….she acted so different too and less energetic and alert. After I read a guy’s article about his dog getting crystals on the Orijen, I called the distributor and asked about the Acana……after all “Orijen is the best as I thought”. I had fed my 75 lb baby Orijen the last 2 years. First year, I fed her the supposed “best” new Blue Wilderness until she got lethargic and hair started shedding……then learned/read how they sold the co. at that time and went with cheaper products. So then went with Orijen Regional Red the past 2 years. Crystals went away and normal PH thank God. I didn’t realize at the time that it might be connected to the food. Had just bought a NEW huge bag of Regional Red….along with the Acana for lower protein. This past week, she got 3 bumps on her rear that then turned to larger bumpy rashes. She started chewing on her tail obsessively and scratching, ate to the bloody skin on all three places, and scratched ALL over. I didn’t know if it was a yeast infection from the antibiotics which it was NOT. I then started giving her the Acana food, bought at the same time, just about 2 weeks ago. OMG…..very lethargic, less alert than before, red eyes and insane itching….even after the new organic “itchless” shampoo. Was scratching her face and sides of her mouth yesterday and today this evening after her “supper” of Acana, which she has NEVER done. She woke up throwing up at 4:00 am yesterday. I found this info and site tonight and now I know FOR SURE that it is this food, and from that new plant. I had called the distributor to ask “where” the food came from…they said KY, not Canada anymore. I had read that on another site also. I “had” felt so assured and happy that she had Orijen and I had found a great food. I’m just praying hard on her to feel better, and throwing away BOTH huge bags tomorrow, the Acana and Orijen! Forget about “transitioning” to a new food…I’ll risk the diarrhea and clogged anal glands instead of giving her this nasty food. I have read hours and hours trying to find a good SAFE Grain Free for her. Will do chicken and rice, but NOW getting the Grain Free Candidae Duck. They have NOT had a recall since 2012, and it was the company that made the decision just for precautions. I pray this food will work and hope the potatoes don’t cause an issue relative to starch/sugar/yeast etc. My heart goes out to anyone and everyone that has had any heartache with their pets/loving part of the family, that has suffered in any way. It TRULY is horrible that more people and companies don’t care more about our pets. These are like our “children” to most of us! For me I know! Thank you truly for sharing your stories and experiences to educate and spare other people and their 4 legged babies etc. I’m praying hard on my baby girl to get back to her old self SOON! Take care, God bless!

I came to this discussion in my search for a quality grain-free fish-based dry food but it raised even more questions.

Specifically I have a question for GSDsForever.
Can you please explain why you say “Orijen’s 6 Fish formula has a pretty poor overall dry matter digestibility”? I looked at the ingredients list and I don’t see any red flags.

Also, Wellness Core Ocean has a very low Omega-3 content for fish-based food; only 0.8% even though it has Canola Oil and Flaxseed Omega-3 fillers.
Orijen has 2.2% Omega-3 with no additional Omega-3 supplements.
Should this lead to conclusion that Wellness Ocean uses less fish and/or lower quality of fish that was de-oiled?
Low percentage of Omega-3 can also be found in these well-reviewed fish products: Hi-Tek Naturals Grain Free Alaskan Fish, Earthborn Holistic Coastal Catch Grain-Free Natural Dry and Merrick Backcountry Raw Infused Pacific Catch Recipe.

With a current fish over-harvesting and fish prices going through the roof, food processing companies seem to compromise on fish quality to keep product price lower.
So I wonder if I should go with a quality meat-based feed and to use a fish-oil supplement instead.

I tried it and it worked great – going to try the Acana Grasslands Regional. I tried the Orijen Regional Red and my lab’s ears turned bright red and he started chewing his feet again. I figured it was the beek since I read that beef can cause an allergic reaction in labs (Morgan, 2005). She advises beef, wheat, and corn which I deselected from your great list (I was already aware of the wheat and corn).

I am sorry that you are going through that :(. I don’t know why they made changes that were so drastic. I did a lot of research for my puppy and originally was going to give him Orijen but returned it after reading all the horror stories. Then I tried Redford and Taste of the Wild and he did not like either. I ended up going with Victor which I read about through dog advisor. In the future should he stop liking this food or if I chose to rotate (you’re more than welcome to give me your opinion on that) I think I will try holistic select salmon and anchovy which is one a friend recommended. I hope this helped.

I tried two small bags of the American made acana/orijen and that was the end of that.
Terrible stuff and Acana was my go-to brand for years.
I read on another forum that one member decided to call Me yucky game and fish. She asked how much fish from Kentucky people should eat and was told no more than six a YEAR. Clearly champion foods didn’t do their due diligence to make sure their ingredient quality stayed the same.

The only good that came from this is it is what lead me down the path towards home cooked food. My dogs are doing SO much better than they ever did on the best of kibbles.
I highly recommend home cooked or raw for those who have the time.
Dogaware.com is a great resource for dog diet and has a book review section so you can find dog food cookbooks that are actually made to meet NRC and/or AAFCO guidelines.

I would do victor brand and they have a food named “hero” (that’s just my opinion). Depending on where you live you can buy it at your local pet shop. I have to order it online because no one sells it locally. I tried Taste of the Wild, Orijen, and Res Ford and none of those worked out for my puppy. Do your research on the brand that I mentioned to help your decision that is how I ended up deciding on this brand. However, obviously every case is a little different. Please let me know if you have any questions or why you decide. I am sorry for what you guys are going through and thank you!

When you are feeding a quality kibble, no supplements are needed (imo).
About a tablespoon of topper, cooked chicken, fish (canned fish is usually cooked), scrambled egg, etc. added to the kibble usually works well.
Again, I don’t think anyone can respond to your question with a blanket statement, it depends on the dog, best to go by what a veterinarian that has examined the dog recommends.
BTW, Orijen is rather rich for an inactive senior dog that may have a medical condition (diagnosed or undiagnosed) my dog with a sensitive stomach abruptly vomited within 20 minutes of being served this quality product (twice). I would add water to any kibble or presoak if the dog has a sensitive stomach. Some supplements, even fish oil, can upset a dog’s stomach, check with your vet first.

    Hi,

I wanted to make sure my dog gets plenty of omega 3s without unbalancing her diet. She already gets fish oil capsules daily. Would feeding a
fish based kibble (eg. Orijen six fish) a few times a week be enough to do this? Or do I need to use actual fish? I’m already giving her around 10% extras as part of her diet. (Veggies and fish/coconut oil) Canned sardines would be wonderful but it would most likely unbalance things a little too much. And I’ve thought about getting premixes but they have a lot of calories per cup so I wouldn’t be able to feed much fish with it. (And I would probably need to feed it at least 4x per week)

    Hi guys,

My dog has been on Orijen Six Fish and has been pretty happy with it (although starting him on it did coincide with his becoming interested in stealing and eating human food for the first time).

Anyway, he’s a large dog and he’s about to turn 10 years old. His vet recommended switching him over to a dog food with low phosphorus and salt. I know Orijen has a senior formulation, but it has the same amount of phosphorus as the Six Fish and regular Adult food they make (1.1%). I’m also a bit sketched out by reports that Orijen’s switch to a Kentucky plant has caused problems for some people.

Are there any 5* dry dog foods that you all have used or know about that I should be considering?

    Thanks!

    Matt,

You might try one of the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet formulas. I’m a pet sitter so I see how dogs do on different foods on a daily basis. Whenever dogs have issues with loose stool, I recommend they switch over to natural balance potato and duck formula. I almost always see immediate improvement after they switch over.

If you’re willing to go the dehydrated food
route, Honest Kitchen will likely do the trick as
well. Dogs on on Honest Kitchen always have solid poop from what I’ve seen

Other brands that are good for sensitive stomAchs are Orijen, Acana, and Nutro.

You can also try adding some canned pumpkin (no sugar) or cooked yams to the food to help bull up the stool.

Hi Jimmy, As far as Salmon oil I give 1 teaspoon. I use Alaskan Salmon oil.Whichever dog food you choose just just pay attention to your dog . He will be the one to say if he likes it and if he has a shiny coat has no itching etc. I will say my last bag of Orijen did come from Canada so if i find it is no longer good i will be changing also.

I would stay away from Orijen. I used to feed it to my pup but that was 2 years ago before they moved to Kentucky and had all theses issues.

I would stay away from store shelf salmon oil as oxidation occurs very quickly.

Feed fresh fish and you will know you are giving your pup none oxide and none spoiled fish oil.

Hello everyone. I am picking up my lab puppy this Friday 1/20/17 and I just want to give him the best food possible. Or should I go with Victor active dog and puppies. A food that I also found here at food advisor…

Thanks, yes I tend to favor the Acana and Fromm over the Natural Balance. I just had some leftover Natural Balance in the pantry from a while ago. I don’t like that Natural Balance uses over 50% potatoes/carbs. I still think Orijen is one of the best brands available.

    Hi Stephanie C,

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

With all the work and effort you are putting in for finding the right kibble why don’t you just make your own dog food? You will know exactly what is going in and you can never worry about chicken

I feed my dog fish meals such as sardines and mackeral twice a week. These fish can either be brought fresh, frozen, or canned. They are cheap to buy at the store since humans don’t like smelly fish..Although canned mackeral and sardines tend to be more expensive than fresh or frozen seafood. Regardless it is so much cheaper than Origen…

I used to feed my dog origen over a year ago when he was a pup but hearing the horror stories about Orijen makes me happy knowing I don’t buy their food anymore

UGH! My dog has been on the Canadian Six Fish for 8 years due to severe chicken allergies. I went out to my local pet stores and bought all the Canadian bags that were under the Kentucky bags!! I just signed up with Chewy today after an extensive conversation with the assistant that they get Orijen Six Fish from Canada only. She couldn’t find anything about the Kentucky plant and her manager didn’t know about the Kentucky plant. I wrote to Orijen yesterday to express my concerns and asked for delivery from Canada. Is there another reputable grain free fish based food as high a quality? http://www.DOGFOODANALYSIS.com is an excellent resource to find out quality of what you are serving your pup. Please share if anyone knows if how to get Orijen from Canada. Good luck to us all!!

Well I always got orijen from chewy that was straight from Canada till last month it was from Kentucky. I contacted chewy cause they still advertise they have the Canadian version but they are selling the Kentucky plants. As soon as I opened it it lacked the freshness smell the Canadian kind has and it was a much lighter shade almost looked like dog chow .I was so pissed trying to find a new brand cause this crap is no where near the quality of the Canadian brand.

I have switched my dogs from Orijen to Timberwolf Organics. They are doing great on it. I have read some complaints about their customer service but I have not experienced any problems. One draw back is they don’t sell it on Chewy. You have to buy it direct from their website unless you have a store near you that sells it. It is less expensive then the Orijen and I feel it is a great food for the price.

While doing research on Orijen I came across this about Blue Buffalo. Admittedly I fed my pup this brand for a year or so and found it didn’t work for him which was when I switched to Orijen. Regardless hers a link I found about Blue Buffalo and now realize it’s just another brand to not trust. Surprisingly it was Purina who caught them. Talk about calling the kettle black….

I honestly do believe that the company isn’t purposely and knowingly wanting to put any pet in danger. Like any new formula or changes to what we are use to in feeding our 4 legged loved ones, there should be more testing of the product to reassure the customers it’s as safe or more safe than before. After doing more research I was able to find out some answers on why they built a new plant in Kentucky. The resources in Canada are limited, like eggs, poultry and the ingredients in general since they (Champion) supply to at least 80 countries and an ever growing USA market. They are very aware of the issues and are continuing to work on the concerns the consumers have. I’m a person who comes down very hard on companies off the bat then do more research which is the wrong way or approach. What needs to be done is to notify the FDA as CC has done, for mostly one purpose, not to shut them down but to make sure the pet food is safe and we don’t pay the price by our pets getting sick. My concerns about the plant in the USA is because of the GMO food chain we have in the U.S. as well as all the chemicals we put in the ground for insect and weed control, antibiotics and hormones in animals added to the pet food. Animals are much more susceptible to it but aren’t able to communicate before it’s too late in some cases. We also have the fears of past recalls where massive amounts of animals have died before the FDA was able to respond. I ask anyone who suspects its the pet food, to set aside a measurable amount to be tested should there be an issue. For me, I’m going to take out a half cup from each bag with its expiration date and batch that’s stamped on every bag should something go awry later. Not just for Orijen but for any dog food of any brand in the future. Believe it or not, Canada has much less restrictions for pet food than we have in the USA. Partially relieved but not completely given my issues stated above. On a side note; A year or so ago the FDA removed dog treats from shelves with ingredients from China that were killing pets but couldn’t find anything detectable so they were put back on the shelves. Just because they couldn’t find anything doesn’t mean there wasn’t some sort of new chemical added that the FDA doesn’t know to test for. To shorten the time for you, I’ve listed what I think are important for notification.
Please call Champion Canada at 780 784 0300 with your questions, issues or concerns,
By State FDA Phone Numbers http://www.fda.gov/Safety/ReportaProblem/ConsumerComplaintCoordinators/default.htm Orijen Kentucky Plant website https://www.orijen.ca/dogstar-kitchens/?lang=us&lang=us Like everyone else, I don’t want to have to worry about what I’m feeding my pet kid wondering if what he’s eating is safe. Hi Krista-

Is there a particular reason for choosing such a high priced food like Orijen or Acana?

    Bea K
    Member

Where have I been?? Just opened the new bag of “Original” I get through Chewy. I immediately called them trying to get some old stock and was out so I went with Red Formula until I find a replacement. They were nice enough to refund and say to give to my local shelter but after reading the reviews of sick pets I can’t in good conscience even do that. I’m thinking the FDA should be informed. Last year they pulled pretty much all the treats coming from China off the shelf and that’s what needs to happen with Orijen. right now I’m thinking Champion didn’t do due diligence at the Kentucky plant of testing the quality before releasing to the public. Having our pets determine by sacrificing them to sickness and even possibly death is reprehensible and they need to be held accountable. To really make a statement, the distributors need to stop selling the product until Champion fixes the problems. When enough of them refuse then Champion has no choice. Thes small local pet stores are the ones to suffer. So I’ll be making a ton of calls to Champion, FDA, Chewy again and local stores. This reminds me so much of the Pharmaceutical company’s, to have the patients be the R&D and when patients start dying then they take it off the market. I’m a hardliner on this stuff. It’s not about just switching to a new food, it’s about keeping new, unknowing consumers informed so they don’t sacrifice their pet. Chewy needs to remove the reviews asap because it’s no longer the same product as before. It’s all new so the reviews aren’t reflecting the true quality that is was before. It’s deceiving imho. We all want the same, to have happy healthy and safe pet kids. That’s our job to protect them. Yes, a soap box, but I’m incredibly upset for Champion for being completely irresponsible on this. My heart goes out to all who’ve suffered…

    Hi,

I was like the idea of a rotational diet for dogs and favor feeding different forms such as kib ble, canned, and freeze dried. But due to budget issues I can really only afford plain dry food. I can afford any type of dry food such as Orijen and Acana because my dog is small and doesn’t eat a lot of dry food. But canned and freeze dried is more expensive and she eats more of canned because it’s less calories. So is it ok that she just gets dry kibble with no other additions? Is this healthy? She does get a fish oil, probiotics and a joint supplement.

I too have fed Canadian made Orijen and Acana for yeats and my dogs did well on these foods. Since the change to the Kentucky formulas I have had nothing but problems. I contacted Champion with all my concerns and urged them to correct the problem before someone’ s beloved pet died, before it was too late. Apparently it is too late. So sorry for your loss of Katie. I know how you feel, you know it was the food even though you can’t prove it. My dog almost died after switching to the new formula. He began to have episodes of collapse shortly after he began to eat his Orijen. This progressed to collapse and seizure. He almost died the last time. I feel like an idiot that it took me so long to figure out it was the food. I had used it for many years and trusted Champion. They don’t care that I almost lost my dog. In the bag that almost killed him I found some large clumps of something so hard you could not break them with a hammer. I sent photos to Champion. They thanked me for the photos. My dogs are all off Acana and Orijen and all health issues are resolving. They were all eating dirt and drinking large amounts of water and then having accidents in the house. My close friend who also fed Acana for years with no problem started to have similar problems after switching to the new formulas. Her dog also collapsed. I can’t prove any of this was related to the food, but I know in my heart it was. I hope Champion corrects the problem before someone else has to suffer such a horrific loss. In the meantime spread the word.

I could not get my dogs to eat the Orijen, but I introduced them to it after they switched to the Kentucky Plant. Prior to that, mine were on Blue Buffalo Rocky Mountain Wilderness Red Meat Formula for Large Breed Dogs. I tried different five star brands, but our German Shepard / Husky mix refused everything. (He grew up on the Blue Buffalo, because that was the only thing our Lab, who has since passed would eat.) I’d give up for a while, and then try again. I tried every flavor of the Orijen, and he just looked at me like I was nuts. He’d eat it only in the evening meal when I mixed it with a half can of the Holistic Selects Meat Pate, and even then he wasn’t crazy about it. Then I tried I And Love And You Nude (not the Naked Essentials). He took to it right away. It is grain free and you can buy it on Chewy. Of course our other dog, a rescured German Shepard will eat anything.

Both dogs have been on the I and Love and You Nude for 3 months now, and they are thriving.

When My rottweiler (mixed) joined us at 5 months, she had some issues. I give her broth with a teaspoon of applecider vinegar every morning and cottage cheese or greek yogurt with a probiotic every afternoon. We feed her orijen, taste of the wild victors, arcana it varies. one cup AM and 1/2 cup 2:00 and one cup PM She is doing well so far and not had any more blood in the urine. They Rx antibiotics several times and I knew that wasn’t the answer.

Thank you for the reply, anon101. I did see the kangaroo and thought that was interesting. I could see perhaps trying it. I’ll also look up Nutrisca products while I’m in this search mode. Another thing I’m worried about is getting her set on some food and then having it mutate again or go away. Some of these foods I don’t know how long they have been around. It would be nice to find another food supplier that has been around for the long haul. I thought that was Champion Foods (Acana/Orijen) and look where that got me. 🙂

My german shepherd has thrived on Acana Regionals (Grasslands and Wild Prairie) and Orijen dry foods until they changed to their Kentucky plant. She got really sick on the Meadowlands, which has replaced Wild Prairie. Compared to the Wild Prairie it smelled rancid. I am so mad that they moved their plant and changed what food they source. So now I’m trying to find a new grain free food that is similar to Acana/Orijen. I tried Fromms game bird dry formula but she seems to get itchy on it. If you recently and successfully changed from Acana or Orijen to something else, what food are you feeding? My local pet store gave me samples of First Mate’s specialty dry foods (chicken meal with blueberries and australian lamb meal), Zignature lamb, Zignature duck, Kasiks free run chicken meal formula as well as their lamb formula, and Carna4 green free duck and also their chicken. I’ve also considered trying the Kirkland brand (Costco-Diamond) as I’ve had some friends have good luck with it. I am aware they had a recall back in 2012. Most importantly I’m trying to find a high quality food for a sensitive eater with sufficient protein for a working dog (she’s my guide dog). Thanks for the feedback!

I’ll second Acana. If I fed kibble, that’s the brand I would choose.

I’ve seen many dogs do well on Orijen (their sister brand), however some do not as it seems to be a bit “rich.”

It’s just my own opinion, but I am not a fan of ProPlan even though certain dogs do well with it.

    Best of luck!

There are any number of brands you can choose and the ratings of those foods are rated on this site. We have a three month old Cavapoo and have been feeding it Orijen Puppy food. For older dogs, Origen Original is about the same. Champion foods are a bit expensive, but they are rated very well. You can find them on Chewey’s web site

Thank you pugmomsandy, I’ll check those out.

Suzanne – from what I’ve been reading about Orijen made in Canada vs KY, it seems as though the quality of the ingredients has changed for the worse and many people are switching because their dogs won’t even eat it. There is a discussion about it listed in the ‘dog food ingredients’ section. You may want to read what some others have been saying.

Above post I said Arnica by accident the food I am referring to is Orijen Regional Red purchased end of November 2016.
