I’m in the same boat… I have two border collie pups 34 and 36 pounds. Half their diet is raw food of my own creation, so the kibble goes a long way. I want to be able to feed them a variety to keep them interested and I think I’ve finally found the brand I want to switch to as they have lots of choices for flavor mixes (going with Orijen/Acana). I’ll probably stick with the 15ish pound bags so they can be rotated to different flavors on just about a monthly basis.
I was just curious about if there is a concern over freshness, what is the threshold for that concern. I think I’ll be fine if I keep rotating.

Eh, I mean, that isn’t something that would honestly concern me. But thats just me. They pulled it off the shelf for a rancid smell. Thixton doesn’t state how they handled it at first, which I’m surprised she doesn’t.
I looked on Ace’s website and found mainly Purina, Science Diet, Nutro, Blackwood and the like. Wonder where Kevin lives that they are carrying Orijen/Acana!
Kevin– You can do that however, I would look into a probiotic to help the tranistion. If you are shopping at a store that carries Orijen and Acana you are probably shopping at a small pet store similar to where I work. They carry different probiotics. See if any of the store employees are knowledgable with that kind of stuff.
You might want to go online and read the problems with Blue Buffalo. That’s why no ratings.
I order Castor & Pollux from Chewy online. If you buy enough, it’s free shipping. I also feed and order from them my kibble, Champion Foods Orijen, 5 stars, .
Jonathan- Very understandable to be concerned about the quality of the ingredients and the integrity of the company. Most of us here feel the exact same way! Orijen is argued as the best dry kibble out on the market. Champion Pet Foods are an award winning Canadian company with an excellent track record and regional sourced ingredients. Very solid choice of food. Fromm same thing. Family owned and operated out of Wisconson for over 100 years, locally sourced ingredients including their vitamin pack (according to a rep). Fromm makes a grain-free Lamb and Lentils recipe so that could be something to look into. Orijen does have lamb I believe in their Tundra formula, but that is also along with many other proteins as well, most a little more on the novel side. Orijen Puppy, Adult and Senior is chicken based and grain-free, where as Fromm’s chicken based foods as far as I’m aware are grain-inclusive.
Hi Lisa- While ToTW has not had recent recalls the manufacturer of the food (Diamond) is notorious for their recalls. That is something important to keep in mind while feeding TotW. Best to keep other choices avaiable to you and your dogs in CASE they do have another recall under Diamond.
Looks yummy! Too bad my pups can’t have it. They don’t do well on potato, sweet potato, yeast extract. Makes them itchy, hot spots. They were born into Orijen until last year. Iall of a sudden, it wreaked havoc on their digestive tracts. Too too many ingredients. I thought about getting an allergy test from Glacier Peak but haven’t yet. $85 per pup, yikes.
I also buy large bags….I called Orijen and asked can I freeze their food and they said no problem. Now I divide it into 5 pound bags and defrost when as needed. Cheaper.
This is a small breed dog it sounds like? Yes Orijen Puppy would be good, however many people believe puppies need to be on grain-inclusive diets until they are mature. Others disagree. I could go either way. My dog did fine as a puppy on a grain-free diet.
Orijen is a great food to feed your new puppy.

He’s only 5k now and won’t grow up much, so I don’t mind to expend some money. What I don’t have is time, so the raw food is out of the question.

Hi Jonathan- I agree with your choice to change foods. TotW is rated highly because the ingredient list is not bad, however even Dr. Mike will tell you to look beyond the ingredient list to the company and the manufactuerer to decide if the food is worth feeding. TotW has already had at least one recall under Diamond if not more and I’m sure more will come.
Orijen/Acana and Fromm are excellent choices. I have fed both Orijen and Fromm and my dog did very well on both. Also why not feed all three? Variety is excellent for dogs!

I agree that THK is excellent food. It’s what brought my 2 old rescues to good health. When the price when up, I had to look elsewhere. Champion Foods Orijen and Acana filled the spot. Same wonderful food, less expensive maybe because it’s from Canada? If you want to rotate food, look at video and try Champion. No vet bills for 12- and 13-yr-olds.
One senior food I will recommend is Orijen Senior. It’s only of the only ones I’ve seen lately that is correctly formulated for a senior dog.

The advice above does not really apply to you unless you have a dog that has a certain medical condition, which a presciption diet may or may not address. A normal healthy dog can and should be able to eat a normal diet which would be high in quality animal protein, moderate to low in fat and very low in carbs.
If you take the time to review the ingredients in Royal Canin, you will notice they use a large amount of corn and rice as their main source of carbs/protein. The food contains no other source of animal protein aside from animal by-products. By-products are a normal part of a dogs diet, however I would call the company and question the quality of the by-products before feeding. E.G make sure they can tell you what part of the chicken they come from and are they human grade.
Around here RC is considered a low quality food with a very high price tag. If you head over to the review side of the website you can find many 4-5 star rated foods that are lower in price and higher in quality than RC.
Some I can recommend that I have fed that found my dog did well on were Fromm, Orijen, EVO, Pure Balance and I am about to get him Wysong Epigen.
I would absolutely NOT suggest ever getting food from your vet that you can buy in a regular store as well. The mark up is insane and you are paying a premium price when you don’t have to. A prescription diet and the regular RC formulas are different as one is vet only and the other is not.
Also vet’s typically do not have training in canine nutrition. They will tell you this. If you have concerns, seek the advice of an actual canine nutritionist in your area or at a local college. Vet’s will always recommend RC, Science Diet and Purina because it’s what they are taught in school are quality foods. They know little beyond that knowledge.
My Cavalier can eat virtually anything. She loves raw and does very well on a high protein, moderate fat diet with a bit higher fiber. That’s my toy breed though – yours could very well be different. When she eats kibble, I try to choose those that are smaller pieces. Although she eats Orijen, which is one of the biggest, with no problem. You can always give dry food a whirl in a coffee grinder if you want to make it smaller. The great thing is, it’s a bit easier to feed them higher quality foods because they eat such small portions. Just be careful, because it’s very easy to overfeed a small dog. There’s much less room for error when you’re only eating 300-some calories per day.
pitlove- Thanks for the feedback. Our Marvel is doing great on the Orijen Puppy- no loose stool or any other problems. It’s just difficult reconciling the different opinions. FWIW, the Vet we saw yesterday was not our regular. I’ll have a talk with her a.s.a.p since she’s more scientific minded.
Hi Robert- I have fed Orijen and I think it is a great food. My dog has always done well on high protein. We have a 10 year old English Springer Spaniel as well who is in the care of my boyfriends parents and they feed Purina ONE. He has terrible skin, he smells, his ears smell and he is losing hair. Spaniel breeds are known for their skin issues so IMO feeding a higher quality food like Orijen will greatly reduce the chances of skin problems down the line.
As for your vet’s concerns with high protein, dogs can efficiently process and digest quality animal protein. Orijen is human grade meats, poultry and fish. However, just like every other kibble it is still cooked. It is cooked at a much lower temperature than Purina ProPlan, but still cooked and those cooked animal proteins might not sit well with your puppy. That being said, if he is doing well and is not having loose stool or any other symptoms, no reason to be concerned.
Our Springer Spaniel is considered a large breed dog given his weight and yours will probably boarder on that too, so make sure you are not overfeeding him. That will aid him not having loose stool and also help prevent skeletal disorders like Pano.

I am so confused. Until recently, our 7 month old English Springer Spaniel was getting Pro Plan Focus (it’s what the Breeder was feeding), but due to lackluster reviews both here and elsewhere, we decided to look for something better and switched her to Orijen Puppy, which gets 5 stars here and rave reviews from other ESS owners. But then yesterday we were in to see the Vet, and he was not very enthusiastic and said it might be too high in protein (it’s 38%). Perhaps he’s working from an “old school” text book, but it’s hard to know whom to believe! FWIW, our pup loves the Orijen, but now I’m wondering if I made the right choice? So many different opinions!
Rescue dogs did well on THK, but so expensive and then price went up. Look at Champion Foods Acana and Orijen, both 5 stars. Nice video. Shows where ingredients come from. I add Tbsp Wysong canned to the kibble. 12- and 13-year-old dogs have no health problems so no vet bills. I order from Chewy online.
I recently brought my almost 1 year and 2 month old pitbull to the vet for what I thought was a yeast infection in his ears. He has been to this new vet 2 times prior and a different vet found a yeast infection so bad under his nails that she thought it was demodex. The old vet who has now since moved out of state to another practice, told me she felt he had a pollen/grass allergy and made no mention of a food intolerance/allergy. His allergy symptoms definitely seem to go down in the “winter time” (I live in Louisiana so we don’t really have real winters) and get worse when it starts getting to be summer. Some of you know that I do feed a rotational diet and I have not seen an improvement in his itchyness when I change foods. Only when the weather changes to cool months. The last few foods he was on that he did well on were Orijen, EVO and Fromm.
This last vet visit after she told me he had yeast in his ears, I mentioned to her that I was planning to try to get him off kibbles with high starch carbs like potatoes. She preceeded to tell me that potatoes were really good for dogs after just telling me he had yeast…I didn’t question her outloud, but that makes ZERO sense to me.
So now I’m torn. She thinks he has both seasonal and food allergies. I think he just has seasonal. I wanted to try him on California Natural Lamb and Rice since it’s just 4 ingredients and no peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes or lentils. Now I just don’t know what to do though. Do I try that food and follow what she told me to do about starting an elimination diet? Or do I go back to feeding 3-5 foods that he does well on like Fromm?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
We have fed a variety of high quality canned food, kibble, and premade raw to our Golden Retriever for her entire life. I’ve recently done research and am just trying to get some more opinions/options. So, in your opinion what is the best canned food out there? Personally, I think Orijen/Acana are top notch when it comes to dry, Stella & Chewy’s or Primal for raw, but haven’t found a personal favorite for canned food.
Which also brings me to.. Does anyone know a high quality canned food that uses chemical free packaging? I wish the brands I listed above had canned foods as well.. Lol. Thanks in advance you guys!
Wow, I did not know that. I know with Hawaii they have really strick rules about animals themselves coming to and from the island. That is really unfortunate about Orijen though! I’d say the best of those brands would be Holistic Select and Earthborn. I don’t know enough about Artemis to tell you my opinion. Wellness is good but again the Green Tea Extract issue.
They brought in Orijen a few years back but because some part of the cooking process did not meet Australia quarantine requirements, Orijen products when through irradiation which caused death of number of cats that consumed Orijen. Since then we don’t get Orijen anymore. I’ve emailed Fromm however they are not planning on expanding overseas yet )): Australia has strict quarantine rules for dog food (for most things actually) so buying online from overseas and having it shipped here is not an option I think as it would not pass quarantine. The good US brands we have here are Wellness, Canidae, Artemis, Holistic Select , Earthborn Holistic, TOTW.
Are you able to order Orijen or Fromm online? I think those would be good choices and Earthborn Holistic seems to be a good brand from what I’ve heard. Someone definitely correct me if i’m wrong but I believe some of Canidae’s lines are manufactured through Diamond and they are notorious for recalls and handling the recalls quite poorly.
Hi Dori – I check all treats I buy for any chicken byproducts since we have determined that chicken is a big allergen for her. The cookie had: whole wheat flour, peanut butter, canola oil, rolled oats, flax seed, dried brewers yeast, turmeric and rosemary extract. I am leaning towards it being the bully stick since we tried once to switch from the Orijen 6 Fish to Orijen Regional Red and she flared up with allergic symptoms- including runny stool with mucous and blood tinged and bumps. She does great on the 6 Fish, but it would be nice to get her a mix of proteins. I always worry that someday she would develop an allergy to fish. I’m just surprised that the Benadryl I’ve been giving her the last few days hasn’t taken down the bumps more. At least they don’t seem to bother her- and they aren’t huge, but with their short coats it really makes it noticeable.

You mentioned your pit had a reaction to Orijen Regional Red which contains a large amount of different types of red meat like Angus Beef. If she also has a beef allergy that could explain the reaction to the bully stick. It is made from cow penis as gross as that may sound lol. Probably avoiding bully sticks would be good as well.
Hi- just found this board while looking for something to help with my 5 yr old Bella who is a blue brindle full APBT. First, we know she has chicken allergies. The first year we had her we battled with bumps. She was on and off antibiotics because the vet thought that was what would help since nothing else they tested her for showed up. She would have bumps, runny/mucousy stool, gas and an always rumbling tummy. After a lot of reading I decided to cut chicken out of her diet as I read that it was a fairly common food allergen. I changed her food to Orijen 6 Fish (we tried Orijen Regional Red and that affected her also) and I also started her on probiotic/digestive enzymes because of being on antibiotics so much. She was completely normal within 1-2 weeks. We rarely have issues unless she gets a treat with chicken meal or something. I am very careful what we or any visitors feed her. I check all treats that I buy for any kind of chicken products. I recently gave her a Bully stick and a different type of dry cookie. I’m not sure if it’s one of those or something else, but my poor baby has tons of hive looking bumps on her head, ears, underarms, etc. (one of her worst reactions yet). She rarely gets itchy when she gets them, but it looks horrible and Benadryl doesn’t seem to be helping. The only other thing we’ve added to her food is Answers Raw Goats milk, but she has been getting that for about 2+ months – so I doubt it’s that. Any ideas on how to bring down these hives would be greatly appreciated. đ
Hi pitlove – my breed is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. My male is 75 lbs. They run from 55 to about 75 pounds. My current boy is on the large end of the spectrum. I like the protein/fat to be in the range Orijen offers but just want to start off with a food that is not quite so rich. I appreciate your suggestions – thanks a bunch!

What breed of dog is this? I’m feeding Precise Holistic Complete at the moment for my pitbull. They have small/medium breed formulas and large/giant breed formulas. The large/giant breed formulas are really great foods for LBP’s and they are much less rich than Orijen. I have fed Orijen with no issue for my dog, however he has always eaten foods with %’s higher than 30 for protein and has no problems with it.
So far I really like the Precise and I plan to use one of their Grain Free formulas next. I’m using a grain inclusive one at the moment, however since I feed a rotational diet I am not worried about adverse reactions to grains as he won’t be on it for more than 1 medium sized bag.
1st remove the probiotics & see what happens. My pups didn’t do well on it, even though it was supposed to help. When they became allergic to Orijen, I switched them to 5 star Zignature Zssentials. No chicken, potato or egg. All symptoms stopped in 24 hrs.
I am getting a puppy at the end of July and want to transition him from what the breeder feeds, Diamond puppy, to a better quality food. A little over two years ago I got a pup from the same breeder and tried to transition to Fromm and had lots of digestive/diarrhea problems, to the point I had to go on the Iams Low Residue food which is very expensive but more importantly, the ingredients are horrible. I eventually transitioned to Natural Balance and finally to Orijen – this dog is now 2 1/2 yrs. old and doing great on the Orijen. So with this puppy I am going to take much longer in the transition (probably a month) and wanted a less rich food recommendation so hopefully I can avoid any digestive upsets. Can you recommend anything in particular that might be less rich but still a good quality food to begin the transition? I always use probiotics with all my dogs so that will be part of the regime as well. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Vet did the same to me. Never went past the 1st bowl of prescription food, it was disgusting. 5 star Zignature Zssentials has no chicken, potato or egg and the results were immediate, the quality & smell is just like Orijen Adult. I also switched to chemical free Aroma Paws jasmine honeysuckle shampoo. It continues to work even after towel drying from a million swims in the chlorinated pool, dandruff is a thing of the past.
Zignature Zssentials was a lifesaver when my dogs became allergic to Orijen Adult and stopped eating. No chicken, potato or egg & is a 5 star formula under the 4 star brand. Purina may be fun for your pup but do a gradual transitional (slowly mix in the good stuff) so she gets used to something healthier!

I second Marie’s recommendations for foods and would like to add Fromm, Nature’s Variety (which has all life stages formulas), Orijen and/or Acana (made by same company).
I have heard natural foods do help reduce shedding a bit, but with the breed you’ve chosen I doubt you will see a lot of difference. He/She will still need regular brushing to prevent matting and keeping up with the removal of the undercoat, especially if you live somewhere like I do (the south) where the summers are crazy hot.
Chris, have you tried petflow.com and wag.com? They may have decent prices. Just open all 4 sites at once and compare the prices of Orijen.

In my other thread I had mentioned I was working on buying a bag of Orijen to try out. I found out non of my local pet stores sell it and nor can they get it in from there distributor apparently. I was thinking of just ordering it offline, can anyone recommend a place online that is decent and cheap? I tried chewy, but to me amazon has it cheaper then them. Chewy always seems to be more expensive.
My two pit bull and chinook mixes slowly became allergic to Orijen Adult. Constant gas and diarrhea. After making sure it wasn’t a medical condition, I switched to Zignature Zssentials, which has no chicken potato egg products. Stools were great the next day and they lost the bloated fat gain from other foods. Maybe it’ll work for your pup!
Your dog is probably bored of the food. Its the same as you changing your diet often so you don’t get bored, your dog would like the same variety.
Give thought to a rotational diet, where you can either rotate the protein source within one brand or the brand and the protein source every 3-4 months to keep your dogs interest peaked. Thats how I solved the problem of my dog being picky and not eating.
I would suggest staying with the 4 to 5 star quality foods and still doing the wet too. I firmly believe wet food should be a part of every dogs diet. Its much healthier for them than dry when you can’t feed a raw diet. Pure Balance is another Walmart brand that is 3.5 or 4 stars I believe for the GF. I feed the dry and wet. I’ve also used Fromm, Nature’s Variety, Orijen, and Precise Holistic Complete.
The google pdf calcium list almost 2 years old. I mention this because on the Editor’s Choice forum someone asked about Orijen Large Breed puppy, and it was not the google doc, but it is on the editor’s list of approved LBP food. I would double check all the foods on the list too since many companies reformulate over the years.

Orijen large breed puppy is on the editors choice approved list of food for large breed puppies. The calcium is minimum 1.2% and 1.5% maximum. I feed it to my mastiff puppy. The Google doc has not been updated for some time.
OK, my little Athena has done it again. I love her to death but I’m at my wits end. I changed from Nutro Natural to Orijen which I thought was a big hit since she scarfed it down like there was no tomorrow. But now she has turned her nose up and I have to beg her to eat her food. I have taken the advise from a few and gotten a different brand and tried to change her to that (Fromm) but she literally looked at me and walked away. I figured it was because it had a different smell so I just kept with the Orijen. So I have a few questions. First is it really good to constantly change dog foods? An if that’s what I need to do is there a place were I can get samples instead of buying one she doesn’t like?

WellnessCORE puppy is a great choice for a giant breed dog, however I would caution you that they made a recent change to their formulas and it now has green tea extract in it which has been linked to liver toxicity in dogs. As for Orijen and Acana, they are both excellent brands and I would highly recommend them after your pup has reached 8-10 months of age as they both unfortuntely do not make a food with the correct calcium and phosphorus levels that giant breed dogs (especially danes) need for proper bone growth and development. My boyfriends brother has had their great dane on Precise Holistic Complete and he is in excellent condition with no skeletal dieases what so ever. They make a large/giant breed puppy formula. However, you would need to order it online.
WellnessCORE isnt going anywhere in terms of the company. My Petco still carries it and will continue to. It might simply just be PetSmart that does not want to do business with their distributer anymore or something like that.
Does your PetSmart carry Nature’s Variety? They make 2 formulas (The Turkey Limited Ingrident Diet and the Rabbit Meal) that both have correct calcium/phosphorus levels.

Wellness all the way! (I feed Wellness Core but the entire brand is great) I’d stay away from blue buffalo period, their manufacturer Diamond Foods is awful and gets recalled more often than not.
Also Orijen / Acana are amazing but have to be ordered online because I think they are made in Canada. Merrick is good, EVO is good but overall Orijen/Acana and wellness are my top pick for nutritional value, ingredient sourcing and manufacturing.
I have an 8 week old baby mantle merle GD. Originally we were going to get a baby girl but didn’t pay for pick of the litter and it turns out there ended up being only one girl đ (Irrelevant, I just get excited talking about danes lol)
ANYWHO, I live in south texas and there is only one PETSMART that is near my house the petco is at least an two hours away. I bought a couple 26lb bags today and they had a “Reduced To Clear” sticker. I bought the last two bags on the shelf. I am concerned that they wont be stocking wellness core anymore. The puppy formula wasn’t the only one that had the reduced to clear sticker and well quite frankly CORE is the only food I’m interested in at the moment that doesn’t have to be ordered online.
I know there are great products out there that are grain free and premium but whatever I’m partial to wellness (and acana/orijen but that has to be ordered and our USPS/FEDEX/ MAIL system here really sucks horribly.)
I asked at the petsmart personnel and they told me that usually reduced to clear means they wont be carrying it anymore, the size of the bags are being changed by the manufacturer or that it is being redesigned/branded by the company…
I guess my question is what has been your experience with petsmart and reduced to clear items and has anyone else heard anything about wellness core in general being discountinued or anything?
Wellness is awesome. Since they dropped diamond (or at least I think they did because of the 2012 fiasco) They are at the top of my list next to Orijen and Acana (Although they are above wellness, I cant order basically anything that comes in the mail)

Okay so here is his history
We obtained him at 8 weeks he was skin and bones. The vets told us to prepare for the worse. He didn’t even weigh a pound! He had blood in his stools but was very playful and alert. They said it was parvovirus, I argued that it was worms. After worming him regularly each week he started to grow and the weight came on. Food was an issue he’d go three months the get sore skin and anal glands. Some food he would have very loose stools.
The vets would give us steroids but overall we just kept moving through different kibbles moving to anything grain free. He never had an ounce of fat on him and had an absolute love of life but never got to an ideal weight for a pointer for more than a month. We managed his environmental exposures to help his paws and kept switching foods every 3 – 6 months unless there was an immediate problem.
In January I researched food until I was blue in the face, by this time I was working at a vets myself. I decided on Orijen… The vets disagreed that he needed so much protein and as he was loosing weight I felt despite him looking fab fur wise, anal gland wise and pads I should listen to one particular vet and give him a carb based diet. He gained nothing and I spoke to a nutritionist who said no way is this the right food for him. So I decided enough is enough we are going raw. I spoke with another nutritionist and she explained meats, percentages etc etc. I’m also adding in some sweet potato and butternut squash to his veggies. The plan is lamb as a main base, little fish each day and small amounts of goats yogurt and veg. Egg each day.. Then move to more meat but all of this slowly slowly..
So my boy is pretty much the dream of my vets, he is very active, yet calm, and they think I’m making too much fuss as he is in their minds healthy!! I have spoken to 7 different vets with all different backgrounds and they all say yes he is underweight but he is fine. But I can see every rib, his hip bones, even his back bones. He shivers in the winter. He needs some fat. We’ve gone from walking him 2.5 hours a day off lead to 1 hour every other day off lead. But we can see that what other dogs do in a week he does in an hour. That’s no exaggeration we once did a 26 mile hike and he was STILL running on the 25th mile! He is just a beautiful dog with a lust for life. He is fast playful and great fun. He plays fetch, plays with my other dog, loves his walks and is active around the house for about 8 hours a day… But very obedient.
Anyway last night I gave him some frozen meat in a bowl and he absolutely woofed it down… So I think it’s a texture issue! I’m sure giving frozen is not good but I’d rather that than no food. He ate some frozen lamb, pumpkin, two eggs and two frozen sprats in the end!!!

Try putting it in a warm water bath in a ziplock bag to take the chill out of it without actually cooking it. Or have you tried just giving it as a treat? Maybe until he is used to the taste and texture? Have you taken him to your vet to make sure there are no underlying issues as to why he is not gaining weight? Double the recommended amount of Orijen, you would think any dog would gain weight.
Please please helpâŠ. I started my two German shorthaired pointers on raw on Friday. One canât get enough of it, the other who has always eaten fine is totally upset with it. He went from Thursday until Saturday night not touching it (mince) with me putting it down for 30 and taking it back up until that meal he ate a little with a lot of coaxing⊠Sunday he ate a bit for breakfast and a tiny bit this evening with coaxing. He is very underweight so we need him to have proper nutrition hence switching him to raw from Orijen. Any cheaper food makes him Ill with allergies, orijen made him loose 5kg he didnât have but allergies healed.
Iâm so worried that
A he wonât start eating a full meal again
B he will loose more weight
C he wonât accept it ever
D he will get really ill

Please please help…. I started my two German shorthaired pointers on raw on Friday. One can’t get enough of it, the other who has always eaten fine is totally upset with it. I’ve read that NutriSource is good for dogs with sensitive tummies.
As far as availability, I doubt most of us in the US know all the foods available in Canada. I know that Acana & Orijen are made by Champion foods in Canada.
