Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”. 1.

Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The second ingredient is chicken broth. Broths are of only modest nutritional value. Yet because they add both flavor and moisture to a dog food, they are a common component in many wet products.

The third ingredient is rice. Is this whole grain rice, brown rice or white rice? Since the word “rice” doesn’t tell us much, it’s impossible to judge the quality of this item.

The fourth ingredient is pumpkin. Pumpkin is a nutritious addition high in complex carbohydrates, beta-carotene and dietary fiber.

The fifth ingredient is calcium lactate, a calcium additive made by the action of lactic acid and calcium carbonate. The ingredient is most likely used here as a calcium supplement prized for its notably high bio-availability.

The sixth ingredient is guar gum, which is a gelling or thickening agent found in many wet pet foods. Refined from dehusked guar beans, guar gum can add a notable amount of dietary fiber to any product.

The seventh ingredient is tricalcium phosphate, a beneficial source of calcium and phosphorus. In addition, this additive is used in wet foods as an emulsifier – an agent designed to disperse a food’s fats more evenly in water.

The eighth ingredient is inulin, a starch-like compound made up of repeating units of carbohydrates and typically sourced from chicory root.

Not only is inulin a natural source of soluble dietary fiber, it’s also a prebiotic used to promote the growth of healthy bacteria in a dog’s digestive tract.

The ninth ingredient is potassium chloride, a nutritional supplement sometimes used as a replacement for the sodium found in table salt.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has one notable exception.

Sodium selenite, is a controversial form of the mineral selenium. Sodium selenite appears to be nutritionally inferior to the more natural source of selenium found in selenium yeast.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Weruva Awesome Belly Easy Digestion Chicken Breast, White Rice & Pumpkin Recipe looks like an above-average, average wet product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 50%, a fat level of 6.3% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 35.8%.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 40.3% and a mean fat level of 16.1%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 35.6% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 41%.

This means this Weruva Awesome canned range contains near-average protein, higher than average carbohydrate and lower than average fat, when compared to typical wet dog food.
