Ingredients Analysis

Raised Right Kidney Support Turkey Recipe has been chosen as a representative of the range.

The first ingredient is turkey heart. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, heart tissue is pure muscle — all meat.  It’s naturally rich in quality protein, minerals and complex B vitamins, too.

The second ingredient is turkey thigh. Turkey is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of turkey”.¹

Turkey is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The third ingredient is blueberries. Blueberries are a good source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.

The fourth ingredient is carrots. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.

The fifth ingredient is zucchini, a type of squash, high in complex carbohydrates.

The sixth ingredient is cranberries, a nutrient-rich fruit that’s also high in fiber.

The seventh ingredient is psyllium seed husk, it is mainly included in pet foods as a source of dietary fiber. The husk is a source of soluble fiber which when combined with water has gelatinous properties. As a source of fiber Psyllium seed husk can be used to support digestive health. It may also be used as a thickener for controlling the texture of pet food.    

The eighth ingredient is extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil contains oleic acid, a healthy monounsaturated fat. It’s also rich in natural antioxidants and carotenoids.

The ninth ingredient is turmeric. Turmeric is a common spice that’s sometimes used to enhance the color and flavor of the food. Turmeric offers anti-inflammatory benefits and is seen as positive in this food.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has two notable exceptions.

First, flaxseed oil, one of the best non-fish sources of omega-3 fatty acids — essential to a dog’s health.

Also, cod liver oil, a fish oil known to be rich in both EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and D.
