Nature’s Protection Superior Care White Dogs product range is made up of 13 recipes with ratings varying from 3.5 to 4.5 stars. The average rating of the whole range is 4.5 stars.

Please note that two of the recipes are unrated: This is because our review methodology favors dog foods rich in meat and the criteria is not applicable for foods made from insect protein. Studies of insect-based diets for dogs are showing some great results but we’ll leave this recipe unrated for now whilst we consider how best to fairly rate this new area of the dog food market.

Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is whitefish, a marine or freshwater species native to Canada and the California coast.

The second ingredient is dried potato pulp or potato flour. Unlike potato starch, potato flour is made from the whole potato (even the skins). This item is considered a gluten-free source of digestible carbohydrates with only modest nutritional value.

The third ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a gluten-free source of complex carbohydrates in a dog food. They are naturally rich in dietary fiber and beta carotene.

The fourth ingredient is peas. Peas are a quality source of carbohydrates. And like all legumes, they’re rich in natural fiber.

However, peas contain about 25% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the meat content of this dog food.

The fifth ingredient is poultry fat. Poultry fat is obtained from rendering, a process similar to making soup in which the fat itself is skimmed from the surface of the liquid.

Poultry fat is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life.

However, poultry fat is a relatively generic ingredient and can be considered lower in quality than a similar item from a named source animal (like chicken fat).

The sixth ingredient is krill meal. Krill are small crustaceans closely related to shrimp. Krill meal is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Because it’s considered a meat concentrate, krill meal contains almost 300% more protein than fresh krill itself.

The seventh ingredient is sugar beet pulp. Beet pulp is a controversial ingredient, a high fiber by-product of sugar beet processing.

Some denounce beet pulp as an inexpensive filler while others cite its outstanding intestinal health and blood sugar benefits.

We only call your attention here to the controversy and believe the inclusion of beet pulp in reasonable amounts in most dog foods is entirely acceptable.

The eighth ingredient is salmon oil. Salmon oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high quality fats boast the highest bio-availability to dogs and humans.

Depending on its level of freshness and purity, salmon oil should be considered a commendable addition.

The ninth ingredient is dynamic micronized clinoptilolite or clinoptilolite clay is generally recognized as safe and approved for use as an anticaking agent in pet foods. A naturally occurring compound rich in many trace minerals.

Reported benefits include the binding of certain mold-based toxins and even controlling diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has two notable exceptions.

First, linseed, it is one of the best plant sources of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Provided they’ve first been ground into a meal, linseeds are also rich in soluble fiber.

However, linseed contains about 19% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

Also, fructooligosaccharides are included here as a prebiotic. Prebiotics support the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine and deliver digestive health benefits.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Nature’s Protection Superior Care White Dogs Grain-Free All Sizes and Life Stages White Fish looks like an above-average dry product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 26.7%, a fat level of 14.4% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 50.9%.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 26.2% and a mean fat level of 14.9%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 51% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 57%.

This means this product line contains near-average protein, above-average carbohydrate, and near-average fat when compared to typical dry dog food.
