Our Verdict

Rating:

Forza10 Active dry product range is made up of 16 recipes with ratings varying from 2 to 4 stars. The average rating of the whole range is 4 stars.

As you can see, this range includes a wide variety of recipes that cater for specific health issues such as kidney support, weight control, oral health, and everyday maintenance.

Please note: These foods receive a lower rating than normal because the criteria we use to rate foods does not always apply to recipes formulated for specific health conditions. Some nutritional levels suited to the everyday feeding of healthy dogs would be inappropriate in a veterinary diet. Similarly, ingredients would be considered controversial and marked down in foods for healthy dogs, but are necessary in formulas that tackle certain issues/concerns.

Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is rice. Is this whole-grain rice, brown rice or white rice? Since the word “rice” doesn’t tell us much, it’s impossible to judge the quality of this item.

The second ingredient is anchovy meal. Because it’s considered a meat concentrate, this named fish meal contains almost 300% more protein than fresh fish.

Fish meal is typically obtained from the “clean, dried, ground tissue of undecomposed whole fish and fish cuttings” of commercial fish operations.1

The third ingredient is fish oil. Fish oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high-quality fats boast the highest bioavailability to dogs and humans.

Depending on its level of freshness and purity, fish oil should be considered a commendable addition.

The fourth ingredient is vegetable oil, a generic oil of unknown origin. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats in any oil is nutritionally critical and can vary significantly (depending on the source).

Without knowing more, it’s impossible to judge the quality of an item so vaguely described. However, compared to a named animal fat, a generic vegetable oil cannot be considered a quality ingredient.

The fifth ingredient is beet pulp. Beet pulp is a controversial ingredient, a high fiber by-product of sugar beet processing.

We only call your attention here to the controversy and believe the inclusion of beet pulp in reasonable amounts in most cat foods is entirely acceptable.

Some denounce beet pulp as an inexpensive filler while others cite its outstanding intestinal health and blood sugar benefits.

Next minerals are included in this ingredients list, as in Europe ingredients are declared a little differently. In the U.S. our nutritional additives are listed within our ingredients list.  In Europe, ingredients and additives are listed separately.  For that reason the category of minerals includes those elements which are classed as an ingredient, rather than an additive, such as calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide.  These elements contribute to the nutritional balance of a food, so we see their inclusion in this product as a positive.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has one notable exception.

Fructooligosaccharides are included here as a prebiotic. Prebiotics support the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine and deliver digestive health benefits.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Forza10 Nutraceutic Active Line Puppy Chondro looks like an above-average dry product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 36%, a fat level of 18% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 38%.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 25% and a mean fat level of 13%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 54% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 52%.

This means this Forza10 Active product line contains below-average, protein, above-average carbohydrate, below-average fat, when compared to typical (dry) dog food.
