N&D Prime is Farmina’s grain-free premium product line. It’s the most protein-rich subrange of N&D, with quality named meat sources as the top ingredient, including chicken, boar, and lamb. It contains sweet potatoes, which are usually substituted for grains as a secondary protein and fiber source.

Ingredients Analysis
The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”. 1
Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.
The second ingredient is herring. Herring is a fatty marine fish naturally high in protein as well as omega 3 fatty acids, essential oils needed by every dog to sustain life.
The third ingredient is herring oil. Herring oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high quality fats boast the highest bioavailability to dogs and humans.
Depending on its level of freshness and purity, herring oil should be considered a commendable addition.
The fourth ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a gluten-free source of complex carbohydrates in a dog food. They are naturally rich in dietary fiber and beta carotene.
The fifth ingredient is pomegranate, a nutrient-rich fruit that’s also high in fiber. Whilst pomegrante is not advisable to feed to dogs fresh, (as the rind and stem have the potential to cause obstruction, and the seeds may cause digestive upset or a choking hazard in small dogs), a pomegrante is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. When included in wet or dry foods, pomegranate would be processed so obstruction would not be an issue.
The sixth ingredient is fructooligosaccharide, an alternative sweetener probably used here as a prebiotic. Prebiotics function to support the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine.
The seventh ingredient is calcium carbonate, likely used here as a dietary mineral supplement.
The eighth ingredient is potassium chloride, a nutritional supplement sometimes used as a replacement for the sodium found in table salt.
From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.
This recipe has two notable exceptions.
First taurine, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of heart muscle. Although taurine is not typically considered essential in canines, some dogs have been shown to be deficient in this critical nutrient.
We view the presence of taurine in this recipe as a positive addition.
In addition, this food includes chelated minerals, minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.
Nutrient Analysis
Based on its ingredients alone, Farmina N&D Prime Chicken and Pomegranate Puppy Mini looks like an above-average wet product.
The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 52%, a fat level of 16% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 24%.
As a group, the brand features a protein content of 49% and a mean fat level of 19%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 23% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 39%.
This means Farmina N&D Prime wet contains above-average protein, below-average carbohydrate, and below-average fat when compared to typical wet dog food.

Francesco Russo founded the Russo Mangimi company in 1965 specializing in animal nutrition. In 1999, the company’s focus shifted to the pet food industry with a new perspective of developing foods based on scientific studies focused on the well-being of pets.
