June 2, 2021 — Sunshine Mills, Inc. is voluntarily recalling multiple dog food products due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
What’s Recalled?
The following products were distributed online and in retail stores. The “best by” date and related lot codes can be found on the back of each package.
No other Sportsman’s Pride, Sprout, Intimidator, or FRM Gold Select products or other lot codes of these products are affected by this recall.
According to the company, no illnesses, injuries or complaints have been reported to date.
Retailers who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to pull these lots from their inventory and shelves.
What Caused the Recall?
The potential for contamination was noted after the firm was notified by the distributor, Fleet Wholesale Supply Company.
The distributor was informed by Minnesota Department of Agriculture when a 5-pound sample of Sprout Sporting Dog Food was collected.
The specimen tested positive for Salmonella during routine surveillance.
About Salmonella
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
If your pet has consumed a recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should discontinue use and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
