FDA Warning Letter To Mid America Pet Food After Salmonella Detected

The FDA has just revealed the details of a warning letter sent to Mid America Pet Food, dated November 22, 2024.

The warning is in reference to follow-up inspections carried out by FDA investigators of the company’s manufacturing facility in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

These inspections were made after Mid America experienced three recalls in September, October, and November last year, when Salmonella was detected in certain lots of Victor dog foods.

The FDA stated in the letter that these foods had been linked to human illnesses: “A total of seven people from seven states were infected with the outbreak strain from January 14, 2023 to August 19, 2023, and one person was hospitalized. Six of the affected people were children under one year of age.”

During the inspections, which were carried out in January and February this year, the FDA collected environmental samples from surfaces in the facility which tested positive for Salmonella, “indicating that your facility may have three resident strains of Salmonella: Salmonella Rissen, Salmonella Minnesota, and Salmonella Mbandaka.”

The warning letter also stated: “During these inspections FDA Investigators found evidence of significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals requirements.

“FDA Investigators observed rainwater entering your facility through the roof while you were manufacturing multiple lots of dog food.

“FDA Investigators observed sanitation deficiencies persisted through the January to February 2024 inspection.”

The warning letter included FDA’s statement to Mid America regarding the pet food manufacturer’s corrective actions taken to prevent another recall stating: “Your root cause analysis does not consider how you will reduce the likelihood the problem will recur.”
