A study from the University of Winchester in the U.K., led by veterinary Professor Andrew Knight and published in ScienceDirect, has found that dogs on vegan diets may experience better health outcomes than those fed standard meat-based or raw diets.
The research, which surveyed 2,536 dog guardians, indicates that plant-based diets could significantly reduce the risk of various health disorders in dogs.
Study Overview and Methods
The study collected health data from dogs over a period of at least one year. Out of the dogs analyzed, 54% were fed conventional meat-based diets, 33% followed raw meat diets, and 13% were on vegan diets.
To assess the dogs’ health, researchers used seven general health indicators, including the frequency of veterinary visits, medication use, progression to therapeutic diets, and veterinary evaluations of illness severity. The study also examined the prevalence of 22 specific health disorders in dogs, using professional veterinary assessments.
Factors such as age, sex, neutering status, breed size, and exercise levels were controlled through regression analysis to ensure that these variables did not skew the results. Despite these controls, the findings consistently pointed to the health benefits of vegan diets in dogs, as dogs on these diets showed significantly better overall health.
Health Benefits of Vegan Diets
The results of the study were striking. Dogs on vegan diets exhibited the lowest rates of overall health disorders at 36%, compared to 43% for dogs on raw meat diets and 49% for those on conventional meat diets. This means that dogs on a plant-based diet were less likely to suffer from common health issues.
The probability of developing specific health disorders was highest in dogs on conventional meat diets for 11 different conditions, in raw meat-fed dogs for eight conditions, and in vegan-fed dogs for only three conditions. Disorders commonly associated with dogs on meat-based diets included digestive issues, arthritis, and obesity. On the other hand, vegan diets were linked to a much lower risk of these health concerns.

Addressing Criticism and Ethical Considerations
Despite these findings, some pet owners and veterinarians express concerns about whether dogs can thrive on a vegan diet. Dogs are carnivorous omnivores, meaning they can digest and derive nutrients from both plant and animal sources. However, there is debate about whether dogs can meet their nutritional needs solely from plants, especially over the long term.
The researchers emphasize that while vegan diets can be beneficial for dogs, the quality and nutritional balance of the diet are crucial. Vegan diets should be formulated to meet all essential nutritional needs, including protein, vitamins, and minerals. Poorly balanced vegan diets could lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients, which might result in health issues over time.
Implications for the Pet Food Industry
As interest in plant-based diets for pets grows, this study has important implications for the pet food industry. Vegan dog food is becoming more popular, particularly among environmentally and ethically conscious pet owners. These owners seek alternatives to meat-based diets to reduce their pets’ carbon footprints and avoid the ethical concerns surrounding meat production.
The findings of this study may further encourage the development of nutritionally balanced vegan dog foods.
Conclusion
The study led by Professor Andrew Knight brings further evidence to the debate over meat-free dog diets. It seems to show that, not only can dogs survive on a vegan diet, but there may be benefits. From a sustainability point of view, this may have a significant impact.
It is worth noting, however, that dogs are carnivorous omnivores. They have a natural carnivorous bias and our rating method and Best Dog Food lists reflect this. So, while dogs can live on a vegan diet, it needs to be very carefully formulated to provide all their required nutrients.
