The Bernedoodle is a mixed breed that combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the strength of the Bernese Mountain Dog. First intentionally bred in 2003 by Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Kennels in Ontario, Canada, this designer breed was created to be a calm, affectionate, and highly intelligent companion dog. Bernedoodles come in three sizes: Toy, Mini, and Standard, and are known for their playful nature and loving temperament.

With their mix of Poodle and Bernese features, Bernedoodles may have curly fur with the Bernese’s tricolor markings, or they may sport straight hair in a solid Poodle color. While they are often called hypoallergenic, the degree to which this is true depends on the coat type, with curlier coats being more allergy-friendly. 

The breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but it is acknowledged by several hybrid registries such as the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club.
