Ingredients Analysis
The first two ingredients are turkey and turkey wings. Turkey is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of turkey”. 1
Turkey is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.
The third ingredient is butternut squash. Squash is a nutritious addition high in complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.
The fourth ingredient is pork liver. This is an organ meat sourced from a named animal and thus considered a beneficial component.
The fifth ingredient is organic spinach. Due to its exceptional vitamin and mineral content, spinach exhibits a remarkably high nutrient Completeness Score 2 of 91.
The sixth ingredient is organic apple, a nutrient-rich fruit that’s also high in fiber.
The seventh ingredient is shiitake mushrooms, they are edible mushrooms which are often categorized as medicinal mushrooms due to reported benefits to increasing lifespan and liver health, alongside many other areas.
Studies are ongoing, however Shiitake mushrooms are a source of dietary and prebiotic fibers and plant-based compounds, such as polyphenols, polyamides and glutathione.
The eighth ingredient is wild-caught Alaskan salmon oil. Salmon oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high-quality fats boast the highest bio-availability to dogs and humans.
Depending on its level of freshness and purity, salmon oil should be considered a commendable addition.
The ninth ingredient is wild-caught cod liver oil, a fish oil known to be rich in both EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamins A and D.
From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.
This recipe includes one notable exception.
Since this recipe contains a number of organic ingredients, we feel compelled to grant this line a more favorable status as we consider its final rating. That’s because organic ingredients must comply with notably more stringent government standards — standards which significantly restrict the use of any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones or antibiotics.
